Potato "Bacon"

Bacon is one of the most sought after foods in this world and is one of the things people find the hardest to give up when transitions into a more sustainable and cruelty free lifestyle.

My partner found bacon very hard to give up and even after several years of being vegan he still craves that smokey barbeque flavor. No one goes vegan because they don’t like the taste of bacon, so to find a substitute that is free of all the cruelty and health issues is always a big win.

Pigs are one of the worlds most intelligent animals and are just as clever as dogs, elephants, dolphins, chimpanzees and are often compared to having the intelligence of a 3-year-old child in many ways. These beautiful animals deserve so much more than to land up on someone’s plate to be enjoyed for a few minutes. Unfortunately, as a society we desensitise ourselves from where meat and animal products such as where dairy and eggs come from. It is my mission to show people that eating Vegan does not have to be boring and there is just such an abundance of choice.

So after hearing “but how can you live with out bacon” a few too many times, this is my very own original potato “bacon” recipe that I created the other day. We were blown away at how easy it was to make, and how delicious it can be! This potato “bacon” is super versatile and can be used in so many ways. Our favorites include adding it to: pizza, pasta, salads and sandwiches.

Time: 15-20 Minutes

Serves: 4

  • 2 potatoes pealed and sliced 1mm thin (I used a peeler to get mine nice and thin)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic

  • 3 teaspoons liquid smoke

  • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

  • 2 teaspoons soya sauce

  • 1½ teaspoons smoked paprika

  • 2-3 drops liquid stevia or any sugar substitute

  • 1 tablespoon oil of your choice

  • 1 pinch of salt

  1. Mix together all the ingredients for the marinade in a small mixing bowl until well combined.

  2. Lightly coat your frying pan with some oil.

  3. Place the thin potato peels into the pan and cook through for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on a medium to high heat.

  4. Add half the marinade and spread evenly over the potatoes.

  5. Continue to cook and then turn the potatoes. Now add the remainder of the marinade to the pan.

  6. Cook through until the potatoes are crispy. Sprinkle a bit more smoked paprika, and voila! Super Easy Bacon.
