Orange Zesty Vegan Hot Cross Buns

With Easter just around the corner its time for everyone to start making/buying hot cross buns and as vegans, we do not want to miss out! This Easter I’m setting things straight by creating this simple vegan hot cross bun recipe that everyone can enjoy. Plus, these buns will go down perfectly with a cup of tea ;)

Time: 1 Hour 45 minutes

Ingredients:

(Makes 16 Buns)

  • 500 grams of white bread flour

  • 500 grams of cake flour

  • ½ teaspoon of salt

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon mixed spice

  • 1 sachet instant dried yeast

  • 3 tablespoons caster sugar or stevia/coconut sugar for a healthier version.

  • 100 grams of raisins

  • 3 tablespoons apple sauce or apple purity

  • zest of 1 large orange

  • ½ cup of plant based milk such as soy/almond/rice milk

  • ½ cup of luke warm water

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil

To make the X’s on the buns:

  • 2 table spoons of all purpose flour

  • 3 table spoons of water

Glaze

  • 1 tablespoon of your favorite jam

  • 1 table spoon of hot water

Directions:

  1. Mix together all the dry ingredients:

  • 500 grams of white bread flour

  • 500 grams of cake flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon mixed spice

  • 1 sachet instant dried yeast

  • 3 tablespoons caster sugar or stevia for a healthier version

  • 100 grams of raisins

  1. Add the 3 tablespoons of apple sauce and the zest of the orange

  2. Add the wet ingredients

  • ½ cup of plant based milk

  • ½ a cup of luke warm water

  1. Mix all the ingredients together using a wooden spoon and then add the 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  2. Mix the mixture until a dough is formed that you can then place on a flour powdered work surface and kneed the dough for 5-10 minutes. Once the dough is smooth and has a shine to it, transfer the dough into a mixing bowl and use the 1 table spoon of olive oil to coat the top of the dough.

  3. Cover the bowl with a dish towel and place in a warm place. I usually put the tumble dyer on and let the bin heat up, turn it off and then place the covered bowel inside to slowly rise in a warm draft free area. Leave the dough to rise for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size

  4. Once the dough has risen the right amount empty it out onto the work surface and press out the air bubbles.

  5. Roll the dough out into a long fat roll and cut in evenly into 16 parts.

  6. Pre heat the oven to 200°C.

  7. Place the 16 equal balls into a well oiled baking tray so that they just make contact with each other.

  8. Lightly coat with a little bit of olive oil. Cover the tray with cling wrap or tin foil and leave to rise for about 30 minutes.

  9. To Make the X on the hot cross buns mix the 2 table spoons of all purpose flour and 3 table spoons of water in a small bowl until it is a gluey consistency.

  10. Put the gluey mixture into a piping bag or just a zip lock bag and cut a small snip in the corner. Pipe the X’s across the buns once they have finished rising.

  11. Place the buns into the oven and cook for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.

  12. To make the glaze just mix 1 tablespoon of your favorite jam and 1 table spoon of hot water until smooth.

  13. Once the buns are cooked coat them with the jam glaze and allow to cool before serving.
